What is Offset Printing?

Offset printing is a printing technique that uses plates, mostly aluminum plates, in order to print an image to a surface. The inked image is transferred from the plate to a rubber blanket that is rolled into a printing surface like paper. It’s called offset because the ink is not transferred directly into the printing surface.

Offset printing is best use when printing large quantities of materials that require high quality image. Examples of printed materials using offset printing include newspapers, flyers, brochures, stationery and books. Offset printing provides a professional, crisp and clean-looking image that has accurate color consistent across the large volume reproduced.

Advantages of Offset Printing

There are a lot of reasons why using offset printing is better than other methods:

  1. Offset printing produces a consistent high quality image. Offset printing produces clear and sharp images as compared to other types of printing. This happens because the rubber blanket conforms to the texture of the printing surface.
  2. Offset printing is economical. When producing large volumes of high quality printed materials, the cheapest type of printing you can use is offset printing. The more you print, the cheaper the price per piece is.
  3. Offset printing allows for special types of inks such as metallic inks. It also has a wider variety of Pantone colors available.
  4. Offset printing offers the highest possible printing quality with greater detail and color fidelity. This is because plates are produced for each aspect of the image being printed.
  5. Offset printing can accommodate a wider variety of paper types even with custom finishes.

Limitations of Offset Printing

While offset printing may seem to be the best solution to your printing needs, there are also limitations to consider when it comes to this printing method.

  1. Offset printing has minimum quantities needed for it to be effective. If your printing need is less than 500 pieces, it would be best to just go for digital printing or other types of printing methods. Offset printing works well for volumes of 500 or more.
  2. Offset printing involves a longer setup time. Because offset printing involves transferring inked image to a plate, this will result to a longer setup time. If you need your image produced really fast, then you need to consider other printing methods.
  3. Offset printing cannot accommodate variable data in the image. If you are producing an image that will require a constantly changing item such as invitations where the recipient names are printed on the invitation, then consider other printing types such as digital printing. Offset printing works well for repetitive image in large quantities.

Offset printing is the best type of printing method to use when producing printed materials in large quantities (hundreds or thousands) or if you require specific, brand-centric Pantone color or special ink types like fluorescent or metallic ink. It is also best if you require a wider variety of custom papers.
